Tributes have been paid following the death of the esteemed Event Director of Craigavon’s hugely popular City Park Parkrun.
Brendan Lennon – who was from Derrytrasna and formerly of Scarva – passed away peacefully on November 26, 2025.
Since the parkrun’s formation in 2012, Brendan had been an “ever-present” cornerstone.
At the weekly 5k community run every Saturday morning, he was always the first to approach runners for a friendly chat, he was engaged in every aspect of the parkrun’s management and became an inspiration to many.
Said City Park parkrun Craigavon of their Event Director’s incredible influence: “Brendan has been an ever-present figure at the Lakes since the earliest days of parkrun in 2012. His hard-work, knowledge and cool head has been key in building Craigavon’s parkrun family, and for positively shaping so many lives.”
As a mark of respect for Brendan the organisation have decided to cancel this coming Saturday’s parkrun (November 29).
With the route taking in the beautiful surrounds of Craigavon’s Lakes in close proximity to South Lake Leisure Centre, Brendan also made many friends within Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council over the years. The Council have also recognised his invaluable contribution to the free event during his tenure.
Speaking to this, Councillor Sarah Duffy shared her condolences by adding: “I am saddened to hear this, I had the pleasure of meeting Brendan when I was Mayor of ABC Council to recognise his commitment and dedication to the park run.
“Such a lovely and unassuming man, thinking of his family, friends and everyone who loved him.”
Portadown Running Club commented: “All at the club were very sad to learn of Brendan’s passing. He was always a great support to us and helped with many parkrun takeovers in recent years.
“One of life’s quiet gentlemen. He will be missed by the entire running community in Portadown. Thoughts and prayers with Cait and the rest of the family.”
Flying Machines Running Club added: “Our running club is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Brendan. Brendan was not only a dedicated race director at City Park parkrun, but a true pillar of our local running community.
“His kindness, enthusiasm, and commitment brought people together every week and inspired so many of us.”
Another person added: “Absolutely gutted to hear this sad news. Brendan brought a smile to the face of everyone he encountered. He brought words of reassurance and with a knowing twinkle in his eye could bring a touch of absurdity to the serious.
“I will miss his wit, kindness and generosity of spirit. Sincere condolences to Cait and Fionnuala and wider family circle during this difficult time. May Brendan’s gentle soul rest in peace.”
A death notice described him as the much loved husband of Cáit, and loving father of Fionnuala, an adored son of Alice and the late John Lennon (Fir Tree Lane, Scarva), a much loved brother of Winifred, Barbara, Frances, Raymond and Aidan, a dear brother in law, and a loving uncle to all his nieces and nephews.
His Funeral will take place on Saturday at 10.30am to St. Mary’s Church, Derrytrasna for 11.00am Requiem Mass. Burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.
