Woman fined after biting police officer following her arrest

Craigavon Courthouse

A Craigavon woman has appeared in court after biting a police officer during her arrest.

Sinead McCann, 24, of Westacres pleaded guilty to assaulting a police officer at Craigavon Magistrates’ Court last Wednesday.

The court heard how police were called to a disturbance on July 2, last year.

McCann was restrained on the floor at the scene with a man standing over her.

Police were then forced to restrain her as she proceeded to kick out and flail her arms.

Court also heard that it was clear to officers that the defendant was under the influence of drink or drugs.

McCann was then handcuffed and placed in a police car and while in the back seat of the vehicle she bit the hand of an officer.

No serious injuries were sustained and McCann continued ranting at a hospital for several hours before she fell asleep.

District Judge Bernie Kelly noted that the defendant had no previous conviction and fined her £200 to be paid within 12 weeks, along with the offender’s levy of £15.
