A fundraiser to help bring home a young Crossmaglen man who tragically passed away in Australia over the weekend has raised close to £40,000 in less than 24 hours.

Just six months ago, 21-year-old Oran Marron emigrated to Perth, “full of hopes and dreams for the future”.

On Sunday, September 21, his sudden and untimely passing from illness left his family, friends and the wider Crossmaglen community devastated.

A GoFundMe page has now been set up to support Oran’s family with funeral arrangements and travel costs.

In a statement on the fundraising page, organisers said: “The devastating news of the passing of our beloved Oran Marron, who sadly left us far too soon at just 21 years old on Sunday, September 21, has shocked our entire community.

“Only six months ago, Oran left Crossmaglen and emigrated to Perth, Australia, full of hopes and dreams for his future. He was a much loved son, grandson, nephew, cousin and friend whose kind heart, bright smile and caring nature touched the lives of everyone who knew him.

“This GoFundMe is set up to reach out to our community for support in helping cover the costs of funeral arrangements and travel expenses to bring his family home with him.

“No family should have to experience such tragedy, especially so far from home. Any contribution, no matter the size, will make a meaningful difference and will be received with the deepest gratitude.

“On behalf of Oran’s family, we thank you for your love, support and kindness as Oran’s memory is honoured and he gets the farewell he deserves.”

Organisers have also confirmed that any excess funds raised will be donated to the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust and the Meningitis Trust.

Oran was deeply involved in his local GAA club from a young age, proudly wearing the black and amber of Cross Rangers.

In a heartfelt tribute earlier this week, the club remembered him as “a great teammate and friend,” adding that “his jolly nature and beautiful smile will be forever remembered.”

Above all, Oran was remembered as a devoted son to his mother Jacqueline, with the club describing the pair as “two peas in a pod.”

His passing comes little more than a year after the death of his teammate and close friend, Caolan Finnegan, with the Crossmaglen community once again plunged into grief.

Oran’s mother Jacqueline also paid tribute to her son in an emotional message, writing: “For all of his 21 years, he was deeply loved — the light of my life, full of laughter, kindness, and mischief. Life will never be the same without him.

“Now it’s time to take our final journey home, from Perth to Crossmaglen, carrying him with me every step of the way. I’ll love you forever Oran, being your Mammy was the greatest gift of my life. Always my angel.”
