Generosity ‘exceeds expectations’ as fundraiser for Crossmaglen’s Caolan surpasses £100,000 target

'Caolan continues his treatment and remains strong and in great spirits and would like me to pass on his thanks and gratitude to everyone'

A GoFundMe page which was set up to support a talented Crossmaglen GAA player as he battles an aggressive form of brain cancer has now surpassed its target of £100,000.

The whopping total – accrued in less than three weeks – demonstrates the determination of 20-year-old Caolan Finnegan’s nearest and dearest in ensuring he continues, unhampered, through this course of treatment.

Both the local community and those further afield have been extremely generous, offering donations alongside kind words of encouragement to a young man held in high esteem.

Gareth O’Neill, who set up the page on Caolan’s behalf, has said that Caolan has “shown tremendous courage” through surgery and eight months of treatment.

However, Caolan – affectionately known to many as ‘Stringer’ – will continue to undergo treatment for the foreseeable future.

All monies raised will go directly to Caolan to support him through treatment and to ensure he is able to “receive the best treatments available.”

Whilst the target of £100,000 has now been surpassed by £1,550, the page is still open and receiving donations.

An update posted by Gareth on on April 1, states: “First of all let me thank you all for your generosity and support which exceeds any expectations we would have had.

“Caolan continues his treatment and remains strong and in great spirits and would like me to pass on his thanks and gratitude to everyone.

“Caolan attended the league finals in Croke Park and although they suffered defeat the Dublin team and mentors insisted on meeting with Caolan and family after the match. A magnificent gesture by Dessie Farrell and his team , thanks to you all.”
