The family of a beloved Crossmaglen man who tragically lost his battle with cancer just over a year ago have shared their heartfelt thanks with the community for their continued support.
An evening was organised at the end of November in memory of star GAA player, Caolan Finnegan.
The 20-year-old Crossmaglen Rangers player passed away in August 2024 following an incredibly brave 12 month battle with brain cancer.
His courage and strength touched the hearts of those from all walks of life, right across the country. Many thousands of pounds were raised in a phenomenal effort from the community to help support Caolan’s battle.
The emotional memorial event was held in Lacey’s Suite at the Carrickdale Hotel, with GAA legend and family friend, Oisin McConville booked as host.
KG Music provided a special performance in tribute to Caolan and a raffle with spot prizes and an auction were held to the benefit of a worthy local charity.
The remainder of funds generously donated by the community through ‘Care for Caolan’ – a fundraiser launched to support his battle with cancer – were also distributed between various charities.
Reflecting on the event, his family said: “The support shown on the night was truly overwhelming and deeply appreciated.
“To all who travelled from near and far, in particular Kieran Donaghy doing a round trip from Kerry, your presence was truly humbling.
“Our sincere thanks to the MCs Oisin, Thomas and Conor for the time, dedication and care they brought to the event, your contribution made the evening meaningful and memorable.
“Thank you to the Carrickdale hotel and their wonderful staff for their professionalism, kindness and hospitality.
“To the very talented musicians who kept us all entertained with a special mention to Kayla, Grace and Saoirse for their lovely tribute to Caolan, ‘Angel of the Match’ thank you all.
“To everyone who donated spot prizes, bought tickets and sent donations your kindness is much appreciated. To Gareth and Dora O’Neill and the Care for Caolan team whose dedication and commitment to the fundraising campaign was immeasurable and through their tireless work many charities are benefitting from the funds raised in Caolan’s name.”
The monies distributed through the Care for Caolan funds, the raffle and auction on the night combined from both Sterling and Euro was a “magnificent” £194,232.50.
They added: “We are very grateful to the representatives from the many charities who accepted donations on the night and to all those whose generosity will make a meaningful difference through these organisations.
“To Caolán/Stringer’s, friends, teammates, coaches and all who shared their memories and stories – thank you.
“Hearing those reflections was both comforting and rewarding and it meant so much to see so many people come together in his honour.
“It was incredibly moving to witness such a strong show of love and support. Stringer’s memory truly lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him and through the charitable organisations who benefited from the night.
“We thank everyone for their ongoing thoughts and prayers and ask you to continue to remember with great fondness our dear Caolan/Stringer.”
