Homeowners in the Killyman area have pleaded with a local Councillor to address foul odours that have seeping into their houses through waterpipes and gullies.

Councillor Clement Cuthbertson (DUP) has called on Mid Ulster District Council officers to take action to ensure that the issue of sewage smells at The Hamlet, Killyman, is properly addressed.

Speaking at the December 18 Council meeting, the Dungannon DEA representative said: “I wanted to highlight an issue that residents in Killyman are facing.

“Residents of The Hamlet development in the village are having a nightmare situation with sewage smells.

“These smells are everywhere. They’re in their houses, coming up the storm water pipes and gullies through the estate.

“Some residents have told me that they can’t even use their washing machines as the water can’t drain away quick enough.

“NIEA [Northern Ireland Environment Agency] have been notified due to the contamination of the sewage into the storm waterpipes, and are investigating.

“I’m raising this as residents are at their wits’ end. Council Environmental Health officers have been dealing with complaints from residents.

“If we can do what we can to get this situation moved on, because it’s unacceptable. The smells in the houses and the fact that you can’t even use a washing machine in a new-build house, it’s ridiculous.”
