Tractor run in memory of Matthew McCallan postponed following death of grandmother

Matthew McCallan from Dunagnnon

A tractor run that was to be held in memory of a young Dungannon man has been postponed following the unexpected death of his grandmother.

The run in aid of Search and Rescue Dog Association (SARDA – Ireland North) was to be held on March 16 on what would have been Matthew McCallan’s 18th birthday.

Matthew had been reported missing by his family in December 2022 when he failed to return home from a social event in Fintona.

Tragically, the then 15-year-old’s body was later discovered in ditch in the laneway of a property approximately two miles away from the social event the following day.

The fundraising event had been planned to celebrate the teen’s notable ‘coming-of-age’ birthday in “a way he would have loved”.

It was to leave Galbally Community Centre at 1pm and finish at Thomas Clarke’s GAC Dungannon with all proceeds to go toward Search and Rescue Dog Association.

Sadly, just two days before the event was planned to go ahead, Matthew’s grandmother Margret took seriously unwell.

In an update to attendees, a spokesperson for the tractor run said: “With great regret we have to reschedule Matthew McCallan Tractor Run until further notice.

“Unfortunately Frances’s [Matthew’s mother] mummy has fallen ill and we all need to be by her side at this time.

“A new date will be posted as soon as possible and we are very sorry to let everyone down but Matthew’s Nana needs us at this time.”

The following day, Margaret Currie passed away. In sharing the regrettable news, a image of Matthew with his grandmother, Margaret and mum, Frances was shared adding: “Matthew and his Nana is now reunited again”.

A death notice described Margaret as the dearly beloved wife of the late Pat, dear mother of Clodagh, Plunkett (Roisin), Frances, Paula (Trevor), Carol (Conor), the late Noreen and grandmother of the late Matthew.

Her funeral was held today (Tuesday) St Malachy’s Church, Edendork with interment afterwards in adjoining cemetery.

The tractor run will remain postponed until further notice.
