Tributes have been paid following the “unimaginable” loss of a “mighty” Dungannon man who sadly lost his battle with cancer after being diagnosed just a few short months ago.
Tighearnán McLoughlin-Roche – known affectionately as ‘Offaly’ – passed away on February 3, 2026 after a brief battle with stage four bowel cancer.
It was while he was in training for the Dublin Marathon, that the “fit and healthy” then 29-year-old father-of-one was given the devastating diagnosis.
In a social media post published in January, his father David said of his son’s resilience in facing that heart-breaking blow: “Since then, he has been bravely fighting an aggressive disease, often with very little relief.
“The strength, resilience, and determination he has shown throughout this time has been nothing short of extraordinary, and we are incredibly proud of him.
“Tighearnan is very clear that while this post may not change things for him, he hopes it might help others.
“If sharing his story encourages even one person to listen to their body, get checked, or look after their health sooner rather than later, then something positive can come from this. That matters deeply to him.”
Now, just weeks later, David has penned the emotional announcement that Tighearnán sadly lost his fight.
“It is with broken hearts that we share our beloved son Tighearnán passed away peacefully today, surrounded by love, after a brief illness borne with great courage,” he said.
“We are deeply grateful that his suffering has now ended, and for the extraordinary care, kindness and support shown to him and to all our family during this difficult time.
“He was devoted to family — in particular his wife Ellie and wee Ailbhe — and to his wider family, who loved him to bits. His life, love, courage and laughter will remain at the heart of our family always.
“Arrangements will be shared in due course. Thank you for keeping Tighearnán and our family in your thoughts and prayers.”
Sharing their last photo together on social media, his beloved uncle Paul added: “He was like another son to me, and a big brother to my team.
“When he lived with us, he brought warmth, humour and a kind of steady presence that filled the house.
“He helped my kids through some of their teenage years — always a guide, but just as often a complete messer. The belly laughs we shared as a family will never be forgotten.
“For his wife Ellie and daughter Ailbhe, his parents Martina, David and Joan, and his siblings Rebecca, Ellen and Katie — my heart bleeds for you.
“Rest now, kiddo. Love you.”
Countless others have shared their heartache upon learning the news of Tighearnán’s death. Those who knew and loved him have described him as “a beautiful soul” and “amazing young man”.
He was a devoted husband to Ellie and father of Ailbhe, who celebrated her first birthday in January.
In January, Kilbeggan Shamrocks GAA club, shared Tighearnán’s story with the poignant message: “Our prayers and thoughts are with Tighearnan at this difficult time.
“Tighearnan trained with us a few years ago and his advice about getting health checks should be heeded, regardless of one’s age.”
His funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
