Easter Monday community clean-up planned at Camlough Lake

Public support is being urged for a community clean-up around Camlough Lake over over the Easter holidays.

Between 11am and 1pm on Easter Monday, it is hoped that as many people as possible will turn out to lend a hand and ‘muck in’.

Newry and Armagh MLA Mickey Brady is urging people from across south Armagh and beyond to get involved in the work at what he describes as “one of the most beautiful places in Ireland and an invaluable local resource”.

He said: “So many of us from across south Armagh and beyond use it and, while it’s good we have that sense of ownership of the lake, that means we also have a responsibility to maintain it as well as enjoying it.

“With so many events happening here the lake now has a national profile so this call extends well beyond Camlough and indeed south Armagh.

“Anyone who has ever used the lake knows what a terrific resource it is so I’m putting the call out to everyone – if you want to maintain the excellent quality of the lake and have a few hours to spare on Easter Monday then get involved.”

MLA Megan Fearon echoed his calls.

“Camlough lake is a real source of pride in south Armagh and understandably so,” she said.

“With the work being carried out around the lake the water level is now exceptionally low and it’s an excellent chance to get in there and do our bit to ensure that when the water level is back up its quality is exceptional.”

Councillor Roisin Mulgrew urged those attending the clean-up to dress appropriately.

“I know many people from around the area will be eager to muck in and lend a hand but I’d ask them to ensure they’re properly attired,” she said.

“We’d recommend old clothes and wellies if you have them. Gloves and bags will be provided.

“This is a great event to get involved with. It shows a real community spirit, will have visible results we can all enjoy and is an excellent reason to get off the couch after all those Easter eggs and get active!”
