Elderly couple and son lucky to escape with their lives following arson attack

Two pensioners and their son were forced to abandon their Richhill home following an arson attack early this morning (Wednesday).

Cecil Williamson, along with his wife Barbara and son Robert David, were lucky to escape with their lives.

The DUP’s William Irwin has slammed those behind the arson attack in the Elm Park area.

The attack involved a car being pushed against a house and set alight causing damage to both the home and car.

Mr Irwin who met with the family today stated: “This is quite a shocking incident and meeting the Williamson family this morning they are clearly shaken and upset by what has been perpetrated against them.

“It is fortunate that no one was seriously injured as a bedroom in the house was totally destroyed in the blaze.”

He added: “I live close to Richhill and it is a very quiet village, therefore this type of incident is concerning and I would certainly echo the calls by the PSNI for anyone who may have witnessed this attack or any suspicious activity in around the Elm Park area, to contact the Police immediately and assist with their inquiries.”

He concluded: “This was an especially reckless attack given the fact it occurred in a built up area and but for the swift response by the emergency services, it could have been much, much worse.”

The couple’s other son, Marc, was murdered in Portadown in August 2011.
