Two men arrested in connection with the ongoing investigation in the attempted murder of Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell on February 22, in the Killyclogher Road area of Omagh, have been released following questioning.
The two men aged 33 and 57 years old were arrested under the Terrorism Act and taken to Musgrave Serious Crime Suite for questioning on Wednesday.
On Friday, detectives were granted more time to question both men.
This follows the release of four men aged 22, 38, 43 and 45 arrested in connection with the shooting without charge.
DCI Caldwell remains in a critical condition in hospital – his injuries described by the Police Federation as “life changing”.
The off-duty PSNI officer was shot multiple times in Co Tyrone on Wednesday February 22 as he placed footballs in the boot of his car, was accompanied by his young son.
Last week the New IRA purportedly claimed responsibility for the attempted murder of Detective Chief Inspector with a typed letter being taped to a wall in Derry – signed by ‘T O’Neill’ – the name previously used by the dissident republican group.
Major Investigation Team detectives continue to ask for the public’s help and appeal to witnesses or those with information to get in touch by calling 101.
Detectives are also highlighting a reward of up to £20,000 from Crimestoppers, who are a charity and independent of the police.
The reward is offered for information given directly to Crimestoppers that leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for John’s attempted murder.
