Hundreds of tractors are expected to take part in a procession through Armagh later this month in a show of protest against plans to change he rules around agricultural inheritance tax.
The Armagh protest – organised by the Ulster Farmers’ Union – will be one of a number of rallies happening across Northern Ireland on Saturday, January 25.
The Union criticised the plans by the new Labour government to impose inheritance tax on UK farms worth more than £1 million, with a 20% rate on assets above that threshold.
It has been warned that around half of all farms in Northern Ireland could be impacted by the proposed changes.
The reforms of the agricultural property relief policy – which currently means farmland is exempt from inheritance tax – are due to come into force in April 2026.
As a result, traffic in Armagh will be impacted as the protest cavalcade makes it way from Edenaveys Road at 2pm.
It will then travel along the following route: Markethill/Armagh Road; Gosford Road; Mullaghbrack Road; Annareagh Road; The New Line; Legcorry Road; Portadown Road; Drummard Road; Barrack Street; Newry Road; and Markethill Road.
Traffic is likely to be impacted between 2pm and 3.30pm.
