A notice of motion objecting to the north-south interconnector in its current form will go before a meeting of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council tomorrow (Monday) night.
The motion will be brought in the names of SDLP Councillors Thomas O’Hanlon and Mealla Campbell and be presented at Craigavon Civic Centre.
It follows the already recorded opposition of the former Armagh City and District Council against the overhead powerlines which covers a great part of the new borough.
The planned development, if permitted to proceed, would stretch between Moy and Derrynoose before crossing the border and continuing on to Cavan.
The motion includes that “this council notes the opposition of the legacy Council (Armagh City and District Council) and also opposes the project in its current form.
“Council calls on the Governments both North and South, the utility regulators and the power companies to listen to the concerns of local residents and businesses and have the project undergrounded.”
The public consultation period is now reaching an end.
A total of 102 towers carrying 400,000kV cables is proposed and fresh planning applications were submitted in early July.
Health and environmental concerns have been expressed continually since the interconnector was first mooted.
Pylons would stretch from Trewmount in Moy, across Benburb, Killylea, Armagh, Keady and beyond to the border.
And there a separate application has been submitted by EirGrid which will carry the £250 million interconnector on to Cavan.
The official planning application is for: “Lands between the proposed new NIE substation at the rear of 152 Trewmount Road, Moy, Co Tyrone, in the townland of Turleenan, to the townlands of Doohat or Crossreagh and Crossbane, Co Armagh, on the border with the Republic Of Ireland.”
