Contracts are expected to be awarded shortly for major environmental improvement schemes for Keady and Richhill, Armagh I can reveal.
Armagh City and District Council has now gone out with a pre-qualification questionnaire in a bid to appoint contractors to see the ambitious plans through.
The full plans were finally given the go-ahead of the council last month and local councillors are ensuring the momentum holds.
The council is seeking a contractor to carry out both schemes.
In relation to Richhill it is for the first phase, which will see environmental improvement works to the village’s main thoroughfare, which includes Corcreevy Road, Irish Street, New Line and the War Memorial.
The second is for ‘streetscape improvements’ for Keady.
The town centre will benefit from environmental improvement along Bridge Street, Davis Street, Market Street, Kinlowen Street and on the Armagh Road. It will also see works in other public areas in the town, including the area around the existing monument, library and mill.
Armagh council gave their final seal of approval for Keady and Richhill’s EI schemes at a meeting early in October.
Councillor Thomas O’Hanlon, who is chairman of the council’s Keady Working Group, explained: “Keady’s environmental improvement scheme is very much needed and will see new footpaths, junction improvements and new street furniture installed throughout the town.
“The main body of work will run from Kinelowen Street at the Fire Station right up the town to the site of the former Police Station at Davis Street; and will see works on Bridge Street, Victoria Street and Market Street in the town.
“It will include improvements around the town’s Kirk Monument and additional car parking in the Square, and will see also see a shop front / spruce up scheme made available to commercial property owners next year to allow them to paint and improve the front of their properties.”
Planners have been asked to ‘fast track’ applications for bot schemes and is hoped that works can begin on site early in January 2015.
A strict deadline for receipt of submissions for contracts has been given as 12 noon on Friday, November 28.
