Keady man bit police officer’s thumb with ‘full force’

He was under the influence, acting in a disorderly manner and shouting profanities at the police.

A Keady man who bit “full force” on a police officer’s thumb is to learn his fate in May, after pleading guilty to the charge.

The case of Gerard Anthony Renaghan, of Cargaclogher Road, was heard at Armagh Magistrates’ Court, sitting at Newry Courthouse on Tuesday.

The 30-year-old was charged with assault on police, disorderly behaviour and resisting police. A defence solicitor told the court that his client was pleading guilty to the charges.

A further charge of attempted criminal damage was withdrawn by the prosecution.

The court heard that on Saturday March 11 this year, at approximately 8pm, police attended an incident on Main Street in Keady. The defendant was restrained and handcuffed.

He was under the influence, acting in a disorderly manner and shouting profanities at the police. He was then arrested for disorderly behaviour and other offences.

Whilst being placed in the rear of the police car, he became aggressive and called the officers offensive “names”.

He then made an advancement towards the officer, and was brought to the ground in a controlled manner.

The defendant is reported to haveĀ “bit with full force” on the police officer’s thumb. He was subsequently further arrested.

On hearing the facts of the case outlined to the court, District Judge Anne Marshall concluded that she would need a pre-sentence report before dealing with the case.

She said: “He needs to attend his appointments with probation and come back to court in person to be sentenced on the 30th of May.”
