Armagh Lord Mayor Cathy Rafferty is urging people from all traditions in Armagh to come out and enjoy Seachtain na Gaeilge in the city.
The Armagh Sinn Fein representative said the language was for everyone, as were the festivities in this year’s celebration, which runs until St Patrick’s Day, March 17.
“Tá fáilte mhór romhaibh uilig go hArd Mhacha le ceiliúradh a dhéanamh ar ár naomhphatrún féin Pádraig, a bhunaigh a ardeaglais anseo i bpríomhchathair eaglasta na hÉireann agus i bpríomhchathair ársa na nGael i gCúige Uladh,” she said.
“Armagh will be celebrating Seachtain na Gaeilge or Irish language week, with a wide-ranging programme of events for the Irish language community in the city and for those interested in the language.
“As well as numerous classes,conversation groups, Irish language singing, poetry and music sessions, there will be trips for children from Gaelscoileanna, a special celebration of 20 years of Irish medium education in the city, a bilingual hillwalking group, an Irish language drama competition for schools, a bilingual tour of the Church of Ireland cathedral and the launch of Armagh’s very own cultúrlann, Aonach Mhacha.
“Déanaigí ceiliúradh ar theanga dhúchais Ard Mhacha. Join us in celebrating the Irish language, which has been spoken continuously in Armagh for thousands of years.”
