Closure of Lurgan’s Newline Recycling Centre pushed back to 2026 to avoid Christmas disruption

Lurgan Newline recycling centre Strike

Plans to temporarily close Newline Household Recycling Centre for major resurfacing works have been postponed until early 2026 – ensuring the busy Lurgan site remains open throughout the Christmas and New Year period.

The centre had originally been expected to shut for up to three weeks this winter to allow extensive improvements to take place, including resurfacing, new line markings and long-awaited upgrades to improve safety for staff and visitors.

However, concerns over winter weather slowing the project – coupled with the heavy seasonal demand on the site – have led Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council to move the start date into next year.

Local councillors had previously warned that closing Newline during the festive season could lead to increased fly-tipping, heavier demand on neighbouring sites and pressure on bulky waste collection services.

Many residents carry out large clear-outs ahead of Christmas, and councillors stressed that travelling to alternative sites could prove difficult for some households.

DUP Councillor Peter Haire said Council officers have now confirmed to him that they are working on a revised timetable, with new dates to be announced in due course.

The decision comes after councillors were briefed last month on the urgent need for improvements at Newline due to deteriorating ground conditions which were creating health and safety concerns and risking environmental compliance.

In the meantime, the site will continue operating as normal, with no disruption expected for users over the coming months.

Further updates will follow when the revised schedule is finalised.
