A Lurgan man who had his wife in a headlock during a drunken argument has been ordered to complete a “respectful relationships” probation programme.
In sentencing, the district judge told the 32-year-old: “Nothing like this should ever happen again and I hope never to see you in court again.”
Stevie Lee Watson, of Orient Circle, appeared for sentencing on common assault and disorderly behaviour at Craigavon Magistrates’, sitting at Lisburn, on Friday via videolink from his solicitor’s office.
Prosecution outlined that on July 13, shortly before 9pm, police on patrol of the Banbridge Road, Lurgan, observed the defendant holding a female in a headlock, attempting to force her to the ground.
As officers attended, they watched as Watson attempted to grab the woman again and they then intervened.
The defendant was arrested and shouted abuse at the police as he was handcuffed to the rear.
Officers spoke to the victim, who was identified as Watson’s wife. She said that they had an argument which had been fuelled by drink.
Sentencing the defendant, District Judge Rosie Watters told him: “Nothing like this should ever happen again and I hope never to see you in court again.”
Watson was sentenced to a two year probation order with a condition that he completes programmes on respectful relationships and alcohol use.
