Protecting men’s mental health has become the core focus of a new darts club blooming in the small Co Down village of Bleary.
The group, known as ‘Throwing for Change’, was founded in November 2025 by a collective of local men with the aim of “bringing people together to socialise, support wellbeing, and enjoy weekly darts with proper equipment”.
Their idea was to use darts as a “fun, pressure-free way to build confidence, connection and wellbeing”… bringing men together “one dart at a time”.
Telling Armagh I how it all came to be, group spokesperson, Greig Savage said: “The Bleary Cultural and Community group held a meeting in October, where a discussion ensued about Northern Ireland being current darts world champions.
“Many of us enjoy playing darts and the camaraderie that goes with it and we are aware that it is a growing sport in Northern Ireland.
“We also realised the importance of Men’s Mental Health in recent years and we thought there would be no better way to bring the two together!”
Recognising the current mental health crisis among men in Northern Ireland, the group said: “Many men struggle in silence, especially in rural areas, and our vision is to create a supportive, welcoming environment where no one feels alone and everyone feels valued.”
Since launching the initiative, the group has already managed to secure strong sponsorship from several local businesses and its membership is continuously climbing.
Undoubtedly, its early success is in its simplicity. Ultimately, it’s about giving men a “reason to get out of the house”, helping to combat isolation, low mood and stress.
They hope to meet weekly at Bleary Hall – on the Deans Road – to “throw darts and have a chat”. It’s a pressure-free environment where everyone belongs and is made welcome.
Greig added that they are currently working hard at converting Bleary Hall into a darts room where they will be hosting ‘Throwing and Talking’ nights and, all being well, they intend to open in their new facility in mid-February.
The group have also been invited to many other venues around the country, where they plan to bring the important message about Men’s Mental Health, all while playing darts.
Building a sense of community, those who attend are afforded a short “break from life’s pressures” and the reassurance of knowing they are not “facing things on their own”.
Throwing for Change are now inviting expressions of interest from those wishing to attend. Greig delightedly announced that 27 people have already expressed an interest and for the time being they will be initially capping it at 50.
And, as it continues to demonstrate keen interest, Throwing for Change have their sights set on starting a Junior set-up in the “not too distant future” for children.
