The security alert in Woodville Street, Lurgan has ended and all residents have been allowed back into their homes, police have this evening (Sunday) confirmed.
Chief Inspector Tim Flanigan said: “First of all I would like to thank the local community for their patience and co-operation during this operation.
“ATO attended the scene and examined a number of suspicious objects some of which have been declared as viable. They have been taken away for further forensic examination.
“A 33-year-old man and 35-year-old woman who were arrested remain in police custody at this time.”
Chief Inspector Flanigan continued: “I understand incidents like this cause inconvenience and frustration, but our overriding priority will always be the safety of everyone in the community.”
SDLP Upper Bann MLA Dolores Kelly said the security alert led to the evacuation of 16 homes in the Woodville Street area of Lurgan beside Lord Lurgan Park.
“People in this community just want to get on with their lives free from this kind of senseless disruption,” she said.
“No one wants to be in this position and the only people to blame are those responsible for these suspicious devices.”
Speaking earlier, Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart, commented: “I would commend the police for how quickly and effectively they dealt with this incident. There was some disruption for local people but I thank them for their patience and I know the police kept this to a minimum.”
