One of Lurgan’s busiest trading streets to remain closed to traffic until next month

Wall collapse at Foresters Hall in Lurgan North Street

One of Lurgan’s busiest trading streets could be closed to traffic for the next three weeks following the collapse of a wall earlier this month.

An exterior gable wall belonging to the Foresters, which has been undergoing extensive restoration work, collapsed just under a fortnight ago.

The street has re-opened to pedestrians but it could be a while before cars are allowed to return.

Council held a meeting with traders on the issue on Wednesday morning.

Lurgan Alliance councillor, Peter Lavery, said that the contractor is aiming to progress stability improvements to the building so that one lane of the road can be opened for vehicles along North Street.

However this should take approximately three weeks, and until then both lanes will remained closed.

Councillor Lavery said: “Local businesses are open as usual with pedestrian access being maintained along North Street.

“Following the stability improvements, additional work will take place to secure the site which will allow normal two lane traffic flow to resume along North Street in approximately two months time.

“The Historic Environment Division and Department for Infrastructure have agreed to prioritise approvals so that each stage of the situation can be progressed as soon as possible.”

Further updates on timescales will be released by Council as works progress.
