Residents in Lurgan were left “absolutely terrorised” at the weekend as a result of reckless driving and late-night racing – and there was “a complete absence of a police response”.

Sinn Féin councillor Catherine Nelson said families were kept awake, children frightened, and other road users put in danger as cars raced through the area in what she described as “anti-community behaviour”.

“Residents in the Kiln Road and Silverwood area were left absolutely terrorised over the weekend,” Cllr Nelson said.

“Despite repeated calls to the neighbourhood policing team, online reporting, calls to 101 and even a 999 call, there was a complete absence of a police response. Not a single officer attended.

“The PSNI must act swiftly to bring those involved to justice. Local people deserve protection. I am calling on police to attend the area immediately and put a stop to this dangerous activity.

“Those engaging in this behaviour need to wise up and leave the area. Tormenting residents and endangering lives is unacceptable and cannot be tolerated.”

One Kiln resident said this anti-social element “is every night” and “when I open my window the noise is shocking, it’s all the time and doesn’t stop.”

Another wrote: “It was horrendous but we are dealing with this all the time. There are marks on the road at the top of Knockramer Meadows from someone doing this while children were still out playing.”

In response, a police spokesperson confirmed that reports had been received over the weekend and that officers are investigating.

They said: “Police received a number of reports of vehicle-related anti-social behaviour issues in the Silverwood area of Lurgan.

“Officers are conducting a number of enquiries and continue to work with the local community to address any concerns.”
