Public watch on as cat attacked and killed by dog in Lurgan park

'Unfortunately, it appears that the dog involved was a stray and no owner was visible at the time'

It is understood that members of the public watched on in shock as a dog attacked and killed a cat in Lurgan Park earlier today (May 26).

Commenting, Lord Mayor Stephen Moutray described the incident as “distressing”.

“Following reports of the incident, I contacted ABC Council staff and have been informed that the cat’s body has now been removed,” said the Lord Mayor. “Unfortunately, it appears that the dog involved was a stray and no owner was visible at the time.

“This is a highly unfortunate and upsetting incident, made all the more distressing by the fact that it occurred in full view of members of the public.

“I would encourage anyone who may have information regarding the dog involved to report it to the relevant authorities.

“I will continue to liaise with Council officials regarding any further information that becomes available.”

Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council published advice on keeping your dog under control via their Facebook page.

The caption reads: “Many public parks and spaces across our borough require dogs to be kept on leads at all times, and in all public areas dogs must be kept under control to avoid causing stress to other dogs, walkers, joggers, cats, livestock and wildlife.

“We want to promote responsible dog ownership and will robustly investigate all complaints.
