Tributes have been paid to one of Co. Armagh’s oldest residents following her sad passing earlier today (Monday).
Lurgan lady Gladys Anderson died in the early hours of this morning, aged 107.
Upper Bann DUP MP Carla Lockhart led the tributes to Gladys, who was born in Moira on May 24, 1913, before moving to Lurgan at the age of 15.
“This just makes me so sad! Safe in the arms of Jesus,” said Ms Lockhart.
“Wee Gladys Anderson passed away this morning in the early hours. Gladys was in her 108th year. She was a wee gem and someone who was known and loved throughout Lurgan.
“She was a proud Mourneview lady and was known by everyone in the estate. She loved her Saviour and would have told you that she was ‘ready to go’.
“I remember hosting her 100th Birthday party when I was Mayor and I had the privilege of visiting her on numerous occasions up to last year.
“She loved to see people calling and always had a wee chat for everyone. She was a little hard of hearing so her next door neighbours probably heard most of the conversations.
“Gladys was also an honorary member of the DUP and as a party we mourn her passing. I just want to pay tribute to Mr John Dummigan who helped Gladys over the years as elder of Lurgan Free Presbyterian Church.
“For the Dummigan family who treated Gladys like family my thoughts and prayers are with you. Also to Gladys’ wider family circle our sincere sympathies at this difficult time.”
Gladys spent several years in Scotland with her husband Thomas Anderson, a native of Scotland himself. Gladys moved back home when Thomas sadly died before his time, and it was in Lurgan where she would remain.
A death notice said Gladys passed away peacefully at Lisadian House, Hillsborough in her 108th year.
Formerly of Knockshee, Lurgan. Dearly loved wife of the late Tommy, beloved aunt of David Wilson and his wife Lila and family and a dear friend to many.
Funeral Service will be held in accordance with Government guidelines in Lurgan Free Presbyterian Church on Wednesday 16th December at 11am followed by interment in Lurgan Cemetery.
