A Lurgan man who assaulted two police officers after refusing to leave his mother’s home has been ordered to pay a fine of £500.
In sentencing the district judge commented that it was a “very expensive night’s drinking” for the 28-year-old.
Brendan McCarron, of Ennis Green, pleaded guilty to two counts of assault on police and resisting police at Craigavon Magistrates’ Court on Friday.
Prosecution outlined that on January 30, at 8am, police were called to a report of a disturbance in the Ennis Green area of Lurgan.
Officers spoke to the occupant who stated that her son, the defendant, was refusing to leave the address.
Police spoke to McCarron and offered to assist him in finding a new address but he continued to refuse.
After being given numerous opportunities to leave, officers attempted to apply handcuffs but the defendant resisted by tensing up.
He then proceeded to push and kick out at officers prior to his arrest; during interview in police custody the defendant made no comment to questions put.
Defence solicitor Philip Reid stated: “This is not a man who would drink but on this particular night he had drunk too much and his mother had asked him to leave.
“I have seen the bodyworn, it really is up and down. At first he is compliant but then becomes belligerent when police attempt to apply handcuffs.”
He added: “He has now actually found an address out of his mother’s….this is a man who has not been before the court for any violent offence.”
District Judge Bernie Kelly stated: “It is a very expensive nights drinking for him but I accept there are no aggravating features.”
McCarron was ordered to pay a fine of £500, along with the offender’s levy of £15, within 16 weeks.
