SINN Fein Councillors Anthony Flynn, Terry Hearty and Colman Burns have said they are delighted that a number of roads in South Armagh have been included on the Roads Service schedule for resurfacing.
Speaking following a meeting of Newry and Mourne District Council with Roads Service, Councillor Burns spoke about the inclusion of the B30 at Silverbridge, which will receive an upgrade costing £210,000.
“Work will shortly be commencing on the B30 from Fords Cross to the Drumalt Road junction,” he revealed. “This is a welcome development, as people who use this road will know that it is in a state of disrepair which must be addressed.
“I am happy that Roads Service have taken my concerns on board and that they are acting on my suggestion that these new roadworks do not commence until November, to ensure that the current work on the Cully Road has been completed.”
Councillor Terry Hearty also welcomed confirmation that the route from the corner of the Culloville Road at Crossmaglen Square to the Lissaraw Road would also be included in the resurfacing scheme.
He said: “I have had concerns about the safety of this road for quite a while now and I urged Roads Service to undergo the upgrade as soon as possible.
“As such, preparation work has already started and the resurfacing will be complete in the next few weeks.I have also asked Roads Service to look at the road markings and signage at the Culloville corner and asked them to include rumple strips on this section of the road.
“I reiterated the importance of adequate safety measures at this corner, as it has seen a high number of accidents. People unfamiliar with the road seem to be unaware of the directions here and often drive straight across on to the square.”
Roads Service also confirmed that they would be carrying out upgrades on a number of footpaths in Crossmaglen.
Meanwhile, Forkhill Councillor Anthony Flynn has welcomed the fact that part of Jonesboro village has been included too.
“I have received confirmation that the road from the bottom of Church Hill to the shop in Jonesboro will be resurfaced over the coming weeks,” he said. “This is welcome news, as the upgrade is much needed.”
All three councillors requested that members of the public assist Roads Service in the completion of these works by adhering to any traffic calming measures put in place.
