Man knocked down in serious Armagh city accident

A man in his fifties was knocked down and rushed to hospital following a serious accident in Armagh city on Sunday night.

Police have confirmed that just after 9pm yesterday evening a man, aged in his 50s, was involved in a collision with a car at Banbrook Hill, Armagh.

The man was taken to hospital for treatment to his injuries which are currently believed to be serious.

The accident has prompted calls for an urgent meeting with the PSNI and Roads Service

City councillor Seaneen White said traffic calming measures are needed in the area in order to save lives.

“There has been a huge increase in the volume of traffic on this road lately as commuters seek to avoid road works taking place on Railway Street,” she said.

“They are racing up this road to avoid traffic and with no traffic calming measures in place an incident like this was only a matter of time.

“On four separate occasions Sinn Fein representatives have requested that speed bumps be installed along this stretch of road.  Each time that call was rejected and this is the result.

“We are now organising a petition calling for the implementation of speed bumps on the road.

“However, this is not a problem restricted to one road.  There is serious congestion across the city and the Department of Regional Development’s piecemeal approach is simply not getting the job done.  We need real DRD investment in Armagh, particularly in the form of west and east link roads.

“I am calling for an urgent meeting with the PSNI and Roads Service to discuss the implementation of traffic calming and congestion relieving measures across the city before somebody loses their life.”

Councillor White said her thoughts and prayers were with the injured man and his family and she wished him a full and speedy recovery.
