More than £3,000 has been raised for the Children’s Cancer Unit thanks to a community fundraiser organised by Councillor Keith Ratcliffe, with the latest total marking the most successful year yet.
A sum of £3,003 was generated through last Saturday’s ‘Ride to the North Pole’ at Hunter’s Supermarket in Markethill, raising funds for a cause he says is “incredibly important”.
Speaking following the presentation, Cllr Ratcliffe paid tribute to the generosity of those who supported the cause.
“I want to put on record my deep thanks and appreciation to all those who donated so generously,” he said. “This year’s fantastic total is the largest yet and, having handed over the cheque at the Cancer Unit today, it was clear the immensely positive impact that this donation will have.”
He highlighted the particular importance of supporting children and families facing cancer, especially during the festive season.
“A cancer diagnosis is tough on anyone, but I think it’s incredibly difficult for children, particularly at this time of year,” Cllr Ratcliffe added. “It’s heartwarming to know that this community donation will go some way in bringing an extra little bit of joy to these tremendously brave kids.”
The councillor also acknowledged the support of local businesses and individuals who helped make the fundraiser possible.
“I would like to reiterate my best thanks to V02 for the static bikes, J.D. Hunter & Co. for facilitating, those who pedalled and all those who donated,” he said.
Cllr Ratcliffe concluded by extending seasonal good wishes to the wider community, adding: “Finally, I would like to wish all a very happy and blessed Christmas.”
