The ‘Glen’ in Glenanne could be in line for a major transformation with hopes high that a community trail will be upgraded and a new car park put in place.
While at an early stage, an expression of interest is to be made in the hope of drawing down funding for the project from central government.
Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council has agreed to back proposals for the project which would see 2.6kms of a community trail upgraded.
It backed the recommendation of officers in a report to the leisure services committee on Monday evening.
The project would also include car parking.
The Glen is the latest in a line of local attractions and forest parks which have come under the watchful eye of ABC Council for development.
The scheme is estimated to cost in the region of £139,000.
An expression of interest will be made to DAERA under its ‘Forest Park Enhancement and Community Trail Development Scheme 2021/22’.
The programme offers funding for council-led recreational infrastructure projects in rural areas that address social isolation, health and well-being and access issues.
Support may be available for projects which:develop sustainable family orientated outdoor experiences in forest parks; develop sustainable community trails for the proposed project; increase the provision of integrated trail networks – for walking, running, cycling, equestrian – in forest parks; provide an environment that is inclusive and that will aid the wellbeing of all who visit; and increase opportunities for social engagement and interaction with the aim of reducing social isolation.
Council officers held discussions with Glenanne Development Association in relation to upgrading 2.6km of community trails and the development of a new car park at the Glen.
An officer informed Monday’s meeting: “If successful, council would be responsible for the full administration of the project to include management of the design team, contractor, processing invoices and drawdown of claim from funder.
“As the Glen is owned, managed and maintained by Glenanne Development Association prior to the commencement of the project a development agreement would be required between Glenanne Development Association and council.”
