The body of a man has been found at the side of a road in Markethill.
The PSNI and scenes of crime officers have cordoned off the area where the discovery was made by a local female shortly before 7 o’clock this morning (Monday).
They are carrying out a search of the area of the Shillinghill Road. The rural road connects to the Mowhan Road and is not far from the local farmers’ mart.
A PSNI spokesperson confirmed police were at the scene of a “sudden death”.
The identity or age of the deceased is not known at this stage.
Local Ulster Unionist Assemblyman Danny Kennedy said he was “very concerned” to hear the news, describing it as “a tragic loss for some family”.
SDLP Councillor Sharon Haughey has expressed her shock.
She said: “Details are unclear at the moment but there is no doubt that this is very sad news. My thoughts and prayers are with the man’s family and friends. I am also thinking of the person who came across the body; that is not a sight any of us want to come across, especially so unexpected as this.”
Councillor Haughey added: “I urge local people to be patient as the police and emergency services complete their investigations.”
There are no further details at present.
