A petition has been launched for the introduction of a 20mph speed restriction outside Markethill Primary School.
Parents have long lobbied for change outside the County Armagh school on the Mowhan Road but to no avail.
But now, since the introduction of the play park on the same road, calls “to provide children a safe place to play, learn and socialise” have become louder.
Ulster Unionist councillors Jim Speers and Gordon Kennedy, who have launched the petition, said a restricted speed zone would “not only provide safety to children but also peace of mind to parents and guardians”.
They added: “This proposal would also give assurances to parents and allow kids who walk to school or wait for the bus to do so more safely encouraging a more sustainable mode of travel.”
The Cusher councillors will present the petition to the Infrastructure Minister in the hope of a “swift implementation” of a 20mph speed restriction.
Last year 100 schools were included in the department’s speed restriction pilot scheme however, Markethill Primary School was left out.
They concluded: “With the opening of the new play park we feel it is right and proper that a restriction is in place to ensure the safety of everyone especially our primary school pupils”.
