PSNI on ‘worst parts of our job’ following tragic road accident

A man in his 60s died in a road accident on Thursday afternoon

Police night

Dealing with a fatal road accident is “one of the worst parts of our job” said a police spokesperson following the death of a man near Markethill on Thursday afternoon.

The man, in his 60s, died after the Seat Alhambra car he was driving left the road and crashed into a tree on the Bessbrook Road around 2.45pm yesterday.

An ABC PSNI spokesperson said that despite theirs, and the best efforts of other emergency crews, he was not able to be saved.

And today, they are appealing for witnesses to come forward with any information which may “help us help the family”.

“Yesterday, your local crews joined our NIAS and NIFRS colleagues in racing to the scene of a road traffic collision on the Bessbrook Road in Markethill,” the spokesperson said.

“Tragically, despite the best efforts of all your blue light services, a male in his 60’s has died.

“Making that knock on a door is without doubt one of the worst parts of our job, but it is nothing compared to what a family feels as we break that news.

“As we support the family through this horrendous time, we need your help in giving them the answers they need and deserve.

“The vehicle involved was a silver Seat Alhambra. We believe it was travelling along the Bessbrook Road in the direction of the main Markethill/Gosford Road around 2.45pm when the crash happened.

“Were you travelling in the area, particularly along the Bessbrook Road at the time? Did you see the vehicle? Do you have dash cam footage which would show the car?

“Even if you don’t feel it is of relevance, if you have any images of the car on your dash cam before the crash, please get in touch with us. Every piece of information we can get could be vital in finding out what has happened.

“The incident number is 703 of yesterday, 11/01/18. Please share this in the hope of finding someone who can help us help the family.

“The thoughts and prayers of all in ABC district are with the family at this tragic time.”
