A murder inquiry has been launched following the death of county Armagh pensioner Eugene Carr last night.
Mr Carr, a disabled man in his 70s, was stabbed with a hook as burglars ransacked his home on August 31.
A post-mortem is to be carried out, but police said it is believed he died of his injuries.
Councillor Roisin Mulgrew said:”There is deep shock within the local Bessbrook community at the news of the death of Eugene.
“This has been a very difficult time for the Carr family and the entire community continue to hold them in our thoughts and prayers.
“The attack on Eugene during a burglary in his home is a live police investigation. I would urge anyone with information that can help bring those responsible for this horrific crime to justice to contact the PSNI.”
Newry, Mourne and Down District Commander, Superintendent Simon Walls said: “We would like to extend our sympathy to the Carr family and thank the wider community for their support during our investigation to date.
“Enquiries are very much ongoing and we are asking witnesses or anyone who believes they can assist in the investigation in any way to contact detectives at Ardmore on the non-emergency number 101.”
A 25-year-old woman and 26-year-old man arrested in the Newry area on September 4 in relation to this attack were later released on police bail pending further enquiries.
