The first scanner to undertake cardiac CTs in the Southern Trust has been installed in South Tyrone Hospital in Dungannon.
The new CT scanner, which cost in the region of £450,000, has replaced an older model which provided outpatient CTs to the population of the Trust for ten years.
Ronan Carroll, Assistant Director of Acute Services for Cancer and Clinical Services at the Southern Health and Social Care Trust, says: “The installation of this state-of-the-art equipment is a welcome development to the range of services provided at South Tyrone Hospital. The scanner along with the normal range of CT scans has advanced features which will now allow for cardiac CT scans to be undertaken for our population.
“We will be able to provide an increasing number of scans every year on this site through a combination of the radiography team undertaking the scans and these being read by our radiologists. All scan reports will be returned to the referrer within the regional diagnostic target times. The Trust and the Radiography Service are very excited to have this new CT scanner installed and the higher quality images it will provide.
Cyril Robinson from Scanner Committee said: “This is a great investment in the hospital and I’m delighted that the Trust has replaced the older scanner. There is excellent radiography staff at South Tyrone Hospital and the Scanner Committee is delighted to have been able to help with equipment for the smooth running of services.”
