Tributes have been paid to one of Newry’s most recognisable and beloved characters.

Ellen Brady passed away suddenly at Daisy Hill Hospital on Sunday April 13 – aged just 21.

She was known by many as a “wee gem” and “beautiful girl” who truly left her mark on all she met.

Ellen was born with a rare genetic condition known as Cornelia De Lange Syndrome that effects both physical and cognitive development – yet despite her diagnosis and all its challenges she wore a constant smile and enjoyed life to its fullest.

She was a former pupil of Rathore School where was a cherished part of the school’s fabric, building lasting friendships and many fond memories and, as such, news of her death has come as a shock to the entire local community.

Sharing their condolences, one person said: “Awe Miss Ellen Brady, hearts are breaking everywhere at this devastating news.

“For sure, your favourite nurse will be waiting on you at the gates of heaven.

“Deepest sympathies to Gerry and Nuala and the boys, and to everyone who loved Ellen. May she rest in eternal peace.”

Another added: “Deeply shocked and saddened to learn of wee Ellen’s sudden passing; thinking of the entire Brady/ Hughes families ; also her very many friends at this very difficult time; A wee Angel taken too soon.”

As a mark of respect, Ellen’s local Gaelic Football Club in Ballyholland have proposed to “stand together as a community, to show respect for our beloved Ellen as she arrives home to Ballyholland tonight (April 14) at 6.30pm”.

A death notice describes Ellen as the darling daughter of Gerard and Nuala, treasured little sister of Turlough and Chris, devoted granddaughter of Maisie and the late Paschal Hughes and Phyllis and and the late Arthur Brady and loving niece of Mary, Joe, Paschal, Deirdre and the late Ian.

She will repose at her home from this evening until her funeral on Thursday where the funeral cortège will leave her home at 12 noon, walking to Ballyholland Harps GAC via Commons School Road, and will then proceed to St Catherine’s Church, Dominic Street, for Funeral Service at 1pm.

Burial will take place afterwards in Monkshill Cemetery.

Donations can be made in lieu of flowers, if desired to Rathore School c/o Heaney Keenan Funeral Directors.
