Attempted break-in in Rathfriland ‘sent shockwaves through our peaceful town’

Dromore Street Rathfriland

Despite the valiant efforts of one homeowner to force a crowbar-wielding would-be thief from his Rathfriland, the incident has “sent shockwaves through our peaceful town”, says one councillor.

Alderman Glenn Barr, a prominent figure in Rathfriland’s community, expressed his deep concern over the incident, which occurred on Dromore Street on Saturday evening.

Shortly after 7.20pm and shortly before 7.30pm, it was reported to police that entry was gained to a property in the area.

Alderman Barr said: “The attempted break-in has sent shockwaves through our peaceful town. Rathfriland has always been a safe and welcoming community, and acts of criminality like this are both alarming and unacceptable.”

He commended the swift response of the local police and urged residents to remain vigilant.

“Our community has always stood strong together, and it’s in times like these that we need to support one another.

“I encourage residents to report any suspicious activity and work closely with the authorities to ensure the safety of our town.”

He added: “The Rathfriland community has a strong tradition of looking out for one another, and this incident has only strengthened the resolve of its residents to maintain the town’s reputation as a safe and secure place to live.

“Local authorities are urging anyone with information related to the attempted break-in to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigation. As the community rallies together in the face of this unsettling event, Rathfriland remains resilient in its commitment to maintaining the peace and security that defines its character.”

The male, described as being 5’10’ in height and wearing dark coloured clothing, made off on foot following the incident.

The investigation is underway and we are appealing to anyone who may have been in the area or noticed any suspicious activity or who may have captured dashcam or mobile footage to contact police on 101 quoting reference number 1481 09/12/23.
