In an inspiring show of dedication and resilience, 35 individuals recently completed a seven-day journey along the Camino Coastal, covering over 100 kilometres under challenging conditions, including hot temperatures and heights, to raise crucial awareness and funds for PIPS Hope and Support.
Thanks to the commitment of these walkers and the generosity of supporters, this incredible effort has raised £63,674.71 (after costs) to support the charity’s essential suicide prevention, mental health and bereavement services.
Highlighting the significance of this journey, the Mayor of Mijas extended an official welcome to the group, inviting them into the council chambers to hear more about their experience and to express gratitude for their dedication to a cause that resonates with communities worldwide.
In a show of goodwill and cultural exchange, the walkers presented the Mayor with a token from Newry, Mourne, and Down, further strengthening ties between the two communities.
PIPS Hope and Support, with the expert guidance of tour lead Jacqui Connolly, organised a special blessing for the walkers upon completing their journey.
This event provided a reflective and spiritual moment, honouring the personal sacrifices made by each participant in support of the charity’s mission.
Patricia Nutley, one of the participants, shared her thoughts on the experience, saying: “Walking the Camino was not only a personal challenge but a meaningful journey for all of us united by a shared purpose. It was a truly emotional experience, knowing that each step was contributing to such an important cause.
“The support we felt along the way—from each other, from the community back home, and from everyone who donated—kept us going through the toughest moments. Being able to give back to PIPS, which does so much for our community, made every step worth it, and I feel incredibly grateful to have been part of something so impactful.”
Padraig Harte, Fundraising, Marketing, and Communications Manager for PIPS Hope and Support, expressed his admiration and gratitude for the walkers’ contributions: “The dedication of these 34 individuals has been nothing short of extraordinary.
“Each participant joined this journey for their own reasons, united by the desire to make a difference. Their efforts have raised not only vital funds but also invaluable awareness of suicide prevention and mental health needs in our community.
“Their personal commitment and hard work truly make a difference to our charity, allowing us to continue providing essential services to those in need. We couldn’t be prouder of each and every one of them.
“A heartfelt thank you, as always, to Jacqui Connolly for her tireless support in making these tours truly special and unforgettable. Jacqui’s guidance, expertise, and dedication are invaluable to our cause, and our Camino’s simply would not be the same without her dedication and support.”
