Closed Newry Sports Centre contents could be given away to local sports clubs

Committee asked to agree to plan to dispose of centre assets

The brand new Newry Leisure Centre

Contents of the former Newry Sports Centre are expected to be given away to local clubs and individuals.

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council’s active and healthy communities committee is to be asked to agree to the move when it meets on Monday.

The idea came after an approach was made by a local club – a member of the Newry SANDSA (Sports Association Newry & Down) – enquiring if it could have some redundant lockers and a bench to assit with a child protection issue.

The former sports centre contains surplus small quantities of sports equipment and office furniture, which would have been disposed of or recycled.

But a report to committee states: “These assets would be of assistance and support to local sports clubs and individuals.

“By allocating these small loose assets to SANDSA club members it allows for the clearance of Newry Sports Centre and also council showing support in the development of local sports associations.”

An inventory of items for disposal will be drawn up along with asset disposal documentation.

Newry SANDSA was launched two years ago, in January 2016, and membership is open to any community-based amateur sports club which is registered with its governing body.

Members of SANDSA will be contacted to collate an expression of interest on all items, equipment and material which would then be distributed on a first come, first served basis.

SANDSA members will then have to agree to collect and remove any agreed assets under their own insurance and resources.
