A Newry city MLA has hit out at the “cowards” who attacked a family car in the dead of night on Friday.
Sinn Féin’s Liz Kimmins said the culprits who targeted the car of a family living in the Thomas Street area of the city was very concerning.
Condemning the attack, Ms Kimmins, said: “This attack on life long Republican activist an ex prisoner John Stewart should be condemned by all right thinking people.
“Those who in the dead of night attacked and vandalised the family car scrawling their taunts of hate on it, are cowards.
“They will not intimidate the Stewart family or our community.
“John is a personal friend and colleague of mine. He has for years immersed himself in community activism, and it is beyond belief that any group or organisation would take it upon themselves to intimidate him or his family.”
She added: “If anybody in this community wishes to challenge me or those like the Stewart family who are trying to build the peace or make progress in our communities, then challenge us across a table.
“I’m ready and willing to engage with anyone but the cowardly and anonymous attacks on homes must stop.”
