A number of business premises in Newry were targeted in what has been described as a mindless act of vandalism.
Maura McCourt’s bakery in Ballybot – serving the people of the area for years – had her windows smashed.
Newry MLA Liz Kimmins has wholeheartedly condemned the crime spree.
“The attacks on premises such as Maura McCourts bakery in Ballybot have disgusted all right thinking people.
“Maura has been an institution in the Ballybot area for a lifetime, and this is not only an attack on her and her business, but on the whole community.
“At a time when businesses are under serious pressure due to the current pandemic, it is particularly despicable that someone would do this deliberately.
“Our solidarity to Maura and all whose premises and property were vandalised and if anyone has any information we would urge you bring that forward to the Police.”
Newry & Armagh Sinn Féin MP Mickey Brady said that the person or persons involved in attacking premises in the Ballybot area of Newry last night, had “little to offer the community”.
The MP, speaking after visiting a number of the victims, said: “Our community doesn’t need this mindless vandalism and should be strongly condemned.
“If anyone has any information on the people who carried this out they should contact the PSNI. The person or persons involved in these criminal attacks have little to offer the community.”
Independent Councillor Gavin Malone commented: “I’ve spoken to the owner of a local bakery on Patrick Street who had her shop window busted last night. This lady has had her business in the area for years and lives in the area and is in shock today.
“This window will cost a lot of money to fix in this very difficult time for everyone. Unfortunately more damage was caused to other shops in the Corn Market area. This behaviour is an attack on our whole community.”
