Female staff member threatened at knifepoint during Newry shop robbery

A description of the robber - who fled on foot with cash - has been issued by police

A female member of staff was threatened at knifepoint during a robbery at a shop in Newry last night (Saturday).

Detectives are investigating the incident, which happened at around 5.20pm on Stream Street.

The robber threatened a member of staff with a knife, forcing her to open the till. He then removed a sum of cash and made off on foot.

The robber is described as a white male, approximately 6ft tall with a heavy build and was wearing a black coat , a red coloured hoody with the hood up, dark coloured trousers and black trainers.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information or any dash-cam, mobile or CCTV footage, or who may have witnessed a male matching this description in the area during this time are asked to contact police on 101, quoting reference number 1099 18/01/25.

Sinn Féin councillor, Valerie Harte, said: “I share the disgust of our community at this act of thuggery carried out at the Vivo Shop.

“A young member of staff was forced by knife point to open the Till and the individual brandishing the knife, stole money from it

“This was a frightening experience for the young person involved. This shop which serves the community well has been targeted before, and those thieves carrying out these anti-community crimes care nothing about the staff or the people who avail of the services.”
