Hopes high for huge extension at Newry care home

Number of jobs expected to be created

A Newry care home could be in line for a huge extension.

And it is a development which could see the creation of a number of new jobs.

Kilmorey Care operates four homes in Counties Down, Armagh and Tyrone.

It is now seeking planning permission to add 31 bedrooms to the Our Mother of Mercy home in Newry.

It currently has 28 private and 10 semi-private bedrooms.

Located at Home Avenue, just before the dual-carriageway leading to Warrenpoint, the actual building dates back to 1879.

It was extensively renovated and remodelled during the 1980s to provide modern and comfortable living for its elderly residents, male and female and of all denominations.

Now it is hoped that the next chapter will be written in the home’s history.

Planning approval is being sought to provide an additional 31 bedrooms, as well as alterations to the existing chapel and convent.

A total of 43 extra car parking spaces will be provided on site if the application is given the go-ahead by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council.

A new exit would be provided to allow the introduction of a one-way traffic system and a new footpath, along the existing boundary wall of the site, from the Warrenpoint Road up along Home Avenue, to give pedestrians safe access.

Reassurances have been with the submission of papers that “the extension of the residential home will be in keeping with the existing building”.
