Police say they are continue to investigate the death of a young man in Newry on Tuesday evening.
Dominic McGrath, from Iveagh Crescent in the city, died when he was struck by a bus in the Mall area shortly after 4.30pm.
Inspector Cherith Adair of the PSNI’s Collision Investigation Unit said: “We continue to investigate the circumstances around this collision, which involved a bus, and was reported shortly before 4.40pm.
“Dominic, who was a pedestrian, sadly died at the scene as a result of his injuries. The Mall area has since re-opened to traffic.”
Enquiries are continuing and police would appeal to anyone with any information or dashcam footage available, to contact them on 101 quoting reference number 1144 17/12/24.
Inspector Adair added: “We are also aware that images of the scene of the crash are circulating online and the sharing of these images is causing additional and unnecessary distress to those suffering in the wake of this tragic incident. I ask that people do not add to the pain of those affected by continuing to view or share these images.”
Meanwhile, a GoFundMe page has been set up to help Dominic’s heartbroken mother pay for her son’s funeral costs.
Dominic’s cousin Olivia, writing on behalf of his mother Tina, said: “Hi, my name is Tina and on Tuesday, 17th December, I tragically lost my beautiful son Dominic as he was struck by a bus and sadly lost his life at the scene. My absolute heart is shattered into a million pieces; words can’t describe…he’s at peace now though.”
The post added: “Tina is an elderly woman and it was only two years ago she had to pay out the cost for her beloved daughter’s funeral, Clare – Dominic’s sister – and in no way will she be able to get up to funds to cover funeral and burial expenses and especially this side of Christmas. It’s so heartbreaking watching her, no one deserves to lose a child, let alone lose a child this time of year. Every penny donated and every share will be greatly appreciated by Tina.
