Newry Council present proposals for ‘major investment’ at Jennings Park

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council (NMDD) have submitted plans for a “major investment” to replace Jennings Park’s grass pitches with new synthetic 3G surfacing.

The grass pitches adjacent to Newry Leisure Centre – just off Clanrye Avenue – are owned and maintained by NMDD Council and currently comprise two sports pitches primarily used for football activities on a 3.1 hectare site.

The proposed plans are to upgrade the existing grass pitches to new 3G synthetic pitch to accommodate two soccer pitches and one full size GAA pitch.

In size, the new pitches would comply with IFA Guidelines for adult size playing fields measuring 1410 x 97.5m including run-off areas.

As part of the ambitious proposals, there would be provision of appropriate player run-off areas, replacement of shock pad and any required foundation works, installation of the new 3G surface, new proprietary mobile dug-outs, provision of socketed GAA goals and nets, provision of retractable IFA soccer goal frames/nets, new electrical supply and floodlighting and a new tiered spectator area.

If approved there will also be an installation of new, ball stop fencing, a new pitch drainage system and new perimeter paths – which will also provide improved access to the northwest corner of the existing leisure centre.

If permission is granted, it is anticipated the construction will take eight months, with work to start as soon as possible and to be completed by 2026.

According to a Design & Access Statement accompanying the application the development will represent a “major investment in community facilities that will provide a modern and fit for purpose sports facility for all members of the public, sports clubs and visitors alike.”
