A popular Newry-based food outlet has sought permission to extend into a neighbouring premises to provide a sit-in deli and restaurant.
Owner of Just Good Grub, Mark Haughey – and its sister companies, The Food Market and The Food House in Banbridge – submitted an application for the unit’s internal changes to Newry, Mourne and Down District Council.
The change of use application relates to the premises formerly occupied by Lynas Food Outlet at the Plaza Retail Park in Newry.
The Food Market currently work out of the unit next door but the new plans – if approved – would allow the company to establish a deli and restaurant with the ability for patrons to dine in on site or takeaway – much to the same model as with The Food House in Banbridge.
Plans provide for a closed-off “prep area”, open customer-facing deli area and seating space for diners adjacent to an entrance foyer.
There will also be a small staff area with toilet and storage. A first floor includes additional storage space but this would remain unchanged under the proposals.
According to the application, the space has been designed to allow for the preparation, sale and consumption of hot and cold food on and off the premises.
The unit is one of five in the commercial complex just off the Belfast Road, with neighbouring businesses all comprising hot food takeaways including Dominos, Genoa and Spice India.
Unit 5 – under application – is the largest within the complex, extending to 310 sqm.
The application is due to be advertised shortly.
