A Newry man who threatened to damage his mother’s car with a brick has been sentenced to three months in prison suspended for 12 months.
Court heard that the 29-year-old also damaged a photo frame in his mother’s home by headbutting it.
Joseph Kevin Magill, of no fixed abode, had pleas of guilty entered on his behalf to criminal damage and threats to damage property at the city’s Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.
Prosecution outlined how, on July 11 of this year, police were called to the defendant’s mother’s address in Newry in relation to a domestic disturbance.
Upon arrival, Magill’s mother explained that her son had damaged a photo frame by headbutting it before going outside and lifting a brick.
She stated that the defendant had made threats to damage the windows of her car with the brick but did not do so.
During an interview at Banbridge Custody Suite, Magill admitted to damaging the photo frame but made no comment in relation to the threats to smash the windows of his mother’s car.
Defence counsel stated: “On this particular evening, he had been drinking, he came home and then got into verbals with his mother. His record isn’t good but he appears to offend occasion to occasion.”
The solicitor explained that his client was currently in custody following an arrest for an alleged breach of bail which his client did not accept.
District Judge Eamon King sentenced Magill to three months in prison suspended for a period of 12 months.
