Newry Town Hall turns pink for Organ Donation Week

While Newry Town Hall turned pink to help highlight Organ Donation Week, Council chairman, councillor Mark Murnin, held an information event for Council staff on Thursday.

“I was delighted to host an information event to encourage staff and all members of the public to sign up to become organ donors,” said councillor Murnin.

He added: “This is something that I care passionately about and I am keen to publicise the campaign for increased organ donation. Staff were encouraged to wear pink on Thursday 6 September and responded enthusiastically with all shades and hues of the colour on display.

“I also hope that everyone passing seeing the magnificent Newry Town Hall shinning pink will make people consider organ donation and encourage many to sign the organ donation register.”

During the event a representative from Southern Area Health and Social Care Trust spoke to staff about registering to be a donor.

The message portrayed was clear; ‘tick and tell’- people should tick “yes” to be an organ donor and talk about their wishes with family and friends so their close family are aware of their wish to be an organ donor.

Over 200 people in the North of Ireland are currently waiting on organ donation, while last year 15 died waiting for an organ.
