A major resurfacing scheme is due to take place on the A2 Warrenpoint Road dual carriageway early in the New Year.
The £350,000 works will mean lane closures in the Newry bound direction, with the scheme due to start on Monday, January 11.
The resurfacing work will extend a distance of approximately 800 metres towards Newry from a point approximately two kilometres from Mound Road roundabout.
The Department of Infrastructure says it will deliver “significant improvements to both the structural integrity and surface of the road”.
Due to the nature of the scheme it will be necessary to operate the following closures:
– Closure of Lane One and the hard shoulder from Monday 11 January until Sunday 31 January;
– Closure of Lane Two from Monday 1 February until Friday 21 February;
– Three weekend closures from Mound Road roundabout to Aughnamoira Road between 7.00pm Friday and 6.00am Monday on 12-15 February; 19-22 February; and 26 February-1 March.
During these times a diversion will be in place via A2 Newry Road – Duke Street – Upper Dromore Road – Milltown Road – Bridge Road – Chapel Hill Road and Newry Road.
Said a DfI spokesperson: “In order to help ensure the safety of road users and road workers the public is asked to comply with all temporary traffic restrictions and to drive with care when travelling through, or in the vicinity of, the works.
“The Department has programmed the work and traffic management arrangements to minimise any inconvenience, however, drivers should expect some delays and are advised to leave additional time when planning any journeys.
Completion by 1 March 2021 is dependent on favourable weather conditions. The Department will keep the public informed of any change. All work will be carried out in line with current public health and health and safety advice, with safe systems of working in place for staff and contractors.”
