A Dublin woman who travelled across the border and stole £50 of baby clothes from Tesco has been handed a one month prison sentence.
Brigid Moorhouse, with an address of Westendgate, Dublin, and no previous convictions, was handed a one month prison sentence for a single count of theft at Newry Magistrates’ Court.
The 19-year-old’s defence counsel told the court that, despite pleading guilty from the outset, she had spent almost a month in custody at Hydebank.
He said: “The only reason she was in custody was because she couldn’t raise enough cash for bail which was set at £3,000.”
District Judge Eamonn King questioned who had set the bail, to which the solicitor informed him: “The High Court.”
Judge King, in passing sentence, said: “She has pleaded guilty to this offence of shoplifting. This is her first offence according to the information that’s before the court.
“She has no previous convictions; one month in prison and by my calculations that should mean she is released from custody.”
Moorhouse thanked the judge before he warned her: “I don’t want to see you back here again.”
She agreed.
