Tributes paid to ‘wonderful and ‘kind-hearted’ former Camlough teacher

One former pupil remembered him with such fondness, they said: 'Probably my favourite ever teacher. A gentleman.'

Tributes have been paid to a “wonderful”, “kind-hearted” and “generous” former teacher who has left a lasting impression on countless many lives.

Jimmy Graham – or Mr Graham to his former pupils – passed away peacefully at Daisy Hill Hospital on December 18.

His passing will undoubtedly be felt deeply by the community. Mr Graham was a well known and loved figure across his hometown of Camlough and the wider South Armagh and Newry areas.

He taught for many years at St Joseph’s Primary School, Bessbrook – where he became Vice Principal – and in St Colman’s Primary School, Newry.

In both placements he was hugely respected by both staff and students alike. One former pupil remembered him with such fondness, they said: “Probably my favourite ever teacher. A gentleman.”

Sharing their condolences upon learning of his death, St Joseph’s PS said: “The Governors, Principal and staff of St Joseph’s PS, Bessbrook are saddened to learn of the passing of our former Vice-Principal, Mr Jimmy Graham.

“We extend our sympathies to his children Seamus, Siobhan, Fiona, Nuala, Roisín and Eithne and to the entire Graham family circle.

“St Joseph, pray for him.”

There were many tributes left to the “great” teacher’s manner, kindness and professionalism but there were also those who spoke to his character beyond the classroom.

Involved in all aspects of community life, Mr Graham also gave much of his time to local GAA clubs.

His friends at Shane O’Neills Camloch said: “Everyone at the club would like to the offer their sympathies to the family Jimmy Graham who has passed away.

“Jimmy was the brother of our Irish Summer school teacher Celine Feehan, brother-in-law of our gateman James Feehan (Snr) and uncle of committee and club member James Feehan (Jnr) and G4MO player Susan Feehan.

“To all his family and friends we extend our deepest condolences at this sad time. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.”

Sharing their sympathies another added: “Sincere condolences to Seamus, Siobhán, Fiona, Nuala, Roisin and Eithne and the whole family.

“A wonderful man to know; humorous and kind hearted and generous with his time.

“Another great Carrickcruppen man has left the field of play but he has left some very warm precious memories. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.”

A death notice described Mr Graham as the husband of the late Marie and much loved father of Seamus, Siobhan, Fiona, Nuala, Roisin and Eithne, brother of Mary (Murphy), Angeline (Sands), Celine (Feehan) and the late Noelle (Conway).

A Requiem Mass will be held at 12.30pm in St. Catherine’s Church, Dominic Street, Newry on Monday (December 22) with burial afterwards in St. Malachy’s Cemetery, Carrickcruppen.
